Handmade Christmas cards are so much nicer than commercially bought ones don’t you think? Handmade printable cards are more personal, unique and special than mass produced shop bought greetings cards. Did you know that making your own cards on the computer is pretty simple?

All you need is an inkjet or laser printer, some printer cartridges, paper, and your creative juices.

To start with you need base software on which to build your card. You can either use a template from your word processing or graphics program; use a specially programmed greeting card program, or Google ‘free printable Christmas card templates’.

Choose the type of printer paper you are going to use for your card. It can be plain white or coloured. You can choose from standard weight paper to heavier card stock or even photo quality paper. The next step is to consider the format of your card- for example top fold, side fold, quarter size, half size, postcard print etc.

Now to the fun part! Choose the type of image or picture you want on and in your card. You can choose from simple clip art through to an uploaded photograph from your camera. Use different pictures if you want or create a theme. Consider having a festive border around your card too.

Next, choose the style of font you want. Don’t make it too busy and remember you can create fantastic effect from the use of your different coloured ink cartridges. Now come up with some personal words for your card. It can be a poem or just a simple and plain message. If you need help or inspiration then Google ‘greeting card messages’. Finally, type a little comment on the back of your card saying that it was handmade with love especially for them.

Play around with the positioning of your words and graphics and when you are ready, print preview your card. If you are happy with it print your card and fold it. Make sure that your printer is set to best quality print so that you have a lovely crisp and clear result.

Enjoy making your greeting cards. Please contact us if you would like any help in stocking up on replacement printer ink cartridges or choosing suitable paper.

What sort of printer do you own? When it comes time to replace it will you choose a laser printer or an inkjet printer?

Interestingly, it has recently been reported that, whilst the Australian  printer market is steadily growing with Laser printers running second in popularity to Inkjet printers. The overall trend shows the availability of affordable inkjet printers (less that $400) are replacing low end colour laser printers.  Hewlett Packard continues to hold the most market share with 42% of the market, whilst Canon printers have 20% and Brother printers 15%.

It seems that  High quality printout and good value for money are two main reasons for this increased interest in ink jet printers. Printer manufacturers such as HP, Canon, Samsung, and  Epson,   are working hard at giving us more choice and accessibility to better performing and optioned up affordable printers. As consumers we can only benefit from this competitive and innovative market place.

We recommend you regularly checkout our range of printers at inkdepot.com.au – we frequently have new models coming on line. Remember only buy ink and toner cartridges and printer products from sellers you trust -  inkdepot.com.au only stocks high quality fully guaranteed ink and toner printer cartridges.

A print head essentially applies the printer ink to your paper. The print head is made up of lots of minute nozzles that act as a guide to spray the ink onto the paper when the print button is pressed. Print heads usually run pretty smoothly and many printers these days use disposable print heads in their printer cartridges. That is, every time you replace your ink cartridge you are also replacing the print head. However, some printers do have permanent prints heads. Usually these print heads look after themselves but occasionally you may have to do some maintenance on them. Print head problems usually culminate in poor print quality, lines across your printed page and patchy printing on your page.

According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary the average print head life is about 200 million characters or 3,500 pages A4 size pages. A problem with print heads really only occur if you have exposed your printer to a lot of dirt or dust, or tried to print with an empty printer cartridge. It can also happen if you have not used your printer for a long time and the remaining ink in the print head has dried. If you do have problems with your print head then most printers come with software that will clean the print head for you. Alternatively, you could try gently cleaning the print head yourself with a soft cloth and rubbing alcohol.

Printers have become an essential element of business and home users. Their accessibility and functionality has been two of the most prominent development in inkjet printers, laser printers, photo printers to name a few over the past few years. However, an innovative company called Artefact reports that printer design is becoming stagnant and believes printers need to be more user friendly, sleek and functional.    As a result, Artefact have come up with a nifty concept called SWYP (see what you print). This concept  shows you their ideas of what we might be able to expect from printers in the future.

Some have even suggested that the Artefact funky printer design is more inline with what Apple is known for. Indeed, speculation has it that Tim Cook the new CEO of Apple has been considering adding printers to the  Apple product line. This is not the first time Apple has considered venturing into the printer market. Apple dabbled with quite a range of printers from the late 1970’s- 90’s but with mixed success.

It will be interesting to see what the next five years brings us in terms of printers.

From our previous blogs about printer ink cartridges you will notice a recurring theme about ink cartridges and the environment.

One of the concerns raised about the environmental impact of ink and toner cartridges is the use of petroleum. It is thought that a single traditional toner cartridge uses up to 6 litres of petroleum in its manufacture and operation.

So is there an environmental solution? Yes – there are many developments including the growth in printer cartridge recycling programs. However, a company in Europe has gone one step further and have developed a toner for laser printers that is soy not petroleum based. They have released the world’s first biotoner called SoyPrint. SoyPrint uses soybean oil, a by product from animal feed production, instead of petroleum. Whilst, using soy based products is not new to the printing industry (newspapers and magazines have been using it for many years), soy based laser toner cartridges for the everyday person and business is a big leap.

SymbioPrint is one distributor of soyprint biotoner. They are accumulating an impressive range of printer cartridges that can be used in well known printer brands such as Canon and Hewlett-Packard. With plans to introduce Dell, Lexmark and Samsung soon.

Whilst it is true that most popular big name printers such as Epson, HP, Canon and Brother take both genuine and compatible ink cartridges there are still occasions when a cheaper compatible printer cartridge is not available. Printers that are very new to market or less popular often do not have cheaper printer cartridge alternatives. In these circumstances you have the option to buy genuine replacement cartridges or find a way to refill the empty cartridge yourself.  For quality, reliability and ease we recommend the second option of using genuine ink cartridges rather than trying to refill the empty cartridge yourself.

It is wise to shop around to find a good price for your replacement ink cartridges. Use our handy search function to find out if your printer has compatible ink cartridges available or if genuine ink cartridges are your only option. To search for your cartridges either type in your printer model or cartridge model in the search boxes near the top of our home page or click on your printer brand in the left hand column.

Most people are aware that we shouldn’t throw our empty printer cartridges in the bin as they contribute environmental and pollution issues. Fortunately, there are several options to send old printer ink cartridges to the recycler.  However, other ‘e-waste’ such as old computers, printers, mobile phone and television sets is rapidly becoming a problem. With the propensity for rapid turnover of electronic equipment these unwanted and superseded items are becoming a major waste management problem globally.

The good news is that 2012 will see the commencement of a 5 year rollout of national legislation for an e-waste recycling program. In essence this means any company that manufacturers or imports TVs and computers etc will be required to pay for the end-of-life recycling of these products. Collection points will be available for us to drop off our old equipment for free. The equipment will then be recycled thus preventing millions of e-waste items going to landfill. For more information on this scheme contact the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities.

In the meantime, there are still options available to us for recycling our general e-waste and empty printer ink cartridges. This handy search tool will help find a recycling plant near you.

Whether we use genuine printer cartridges or compatible ink cartridges we all want to know how well they will perform. Our previous blog highlighted research by Choice magazine who found that Compatible ink cartridges save you money. We would like to assure you that we sell only the best quality products and provide a money back guarantee for all our printer ink and toner cartridges. Our range covers genuine and compatible ink cartridges for all major manufacturers including HP, Canon, Samsung, Epson, Lexmark – and more. • Performance – number of pages cartridge will print, cost benefit
  • Quality – colour balance, tones, contrast, consistency, ink standard overall
  • Fading – likelihood over time and exposure
  • Clogging – does print head remain clean.

Replacement printer ink cartridges were recently the subject of  research by Choice magazine. The motivation for the research was to address the incongruity sometimes found between the inexpensive purchase price of inkjet printers and, at times, high running costs. Choice found that if consumers aren’t careful then the cost of replacing their empty ink cartridges can far exceed the original cost of the inkjet printer many times over.

Our previous blogs at Ink Depot have looked at many ways to save money on your printer cartridges. One cost saving tip is to consider using non genuine compatible printer cartridges rather than the genuine OEM ink cartridges. The research by Choice confirmed that significant cost savings can be found when using non genuine, or third party, compatible cartridges. These discounted compatible printer cartridges regularly save over 50% on the cost of genuine OEM printer cartridges and up to 90% when printing black only or up to75% when printing colour images.Save money on ink cartridges

The lesson here is before buying a printer it is very important that you look at the total cost of the package – including the cost of replacement ink cartridges. Compatible ink cartridges are usually of the same quality as genuine cartridges but at a fraction of the price. Reputable sellers will guarantee the quality of compatible cartridges. At inkdepot.com.au we only stock high quality fully guaranteed ink and toner printer cartridges.
